Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles Tendonitis is a condition where the Achilles tendon, at or near its insertion into the heel, becomes inflamed.
This inflammation can be, and usually is painful.
The cause of this type of Tendonitis is overuse, strain or improper biomechanics. At times it can occur concurrently with Plantar Fasciitis.
We see Calgarians develop Achilles Tendonitis, as a result of a repetitive minor impact, such as in repetitive strains or overuse, or as a result of sudden more severe injuries such as trauma.
Injuries are more likely to occur in people who engage in activities where there are quick transitions of speed and are more likely to happen as you are pushing off.
Sports where we see Achilles Tendonitis include:
· Running
· Gymnastics
· Dance
· Football
· Baseball
· Softball
· Basketball
· Tennis
· Volleyball
In the body, tendons anchor our muscles to our skeleton.
Tendonitis is inflammation or irritation of a tendon; persistent tendonitis can lead to tendinosis, a chronic slow healing thickening of the tendinous cord. Tendonosis is consistent with damage at the cellular level.
Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis include pain above the heel that worsens when you stretch your ankle, stand on your toes or severe pain after exercising. There may also be swelling in the area which can be tender to touch.
Tendons are less vascular than muscle. This decreased blood circulation can create a challenge to the healing of tendons.
