Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa.
A bursa is a lubricated cushion (fluid-filled sac) located at points of friction between a bone and the surrounding soft tissue, such as skin, muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Bursitis often occurs from repetitive, minor impact on an area. It can also arise from a severe injury.
The frequency of occurrence of bursitis increases with age. As we age, the tendons become less flexible, are more prone to tearing and tolerate less stress.
Bursitis typically affects the elbows, shoulders, hips, knees and Achilles tendons. The typical symptom is a build up of pain, either gradual or severe.
