Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) is one of the most common causes of lower back pain.
Although not technically a disease, degenerative discs are common commonly associated with age. Considering Degenerative Disc Disease is a time-based illness would be appropriate. Those patients with spinal trauma, such as Motor Vehicle Accidents are more likely over time to develop DDD.
DDD is a combination of instability and inflammation at segmental levels of the spine.
Typically, patients with DDD describe the pain as Low-level chronic pain with periods or episodes of more severe disability.
DDD is also most common in either the neck or lower back. Some symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease are:
- Increased pain with activities that involve bending or twisting
- Spinal instability often described as a giving out sensation. The spinal instability oscillates between a feeling of excess motion and locking up.
- Muscle tension or muscle spasms, which are common effects of spinal instability.
