Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) affects the temporomandibular joint which is the sliding hinge that connects the jawbone to the skull.
TMJ Syndrome can cause pain in the joint and in the muscles that control the jaw movement.
The cause of TMJ syndrome can be from a variety of factors and therefore, is difficult to determine an exact cause.
Some reasons people acquire this syndrome are:
- Genetics
- Arthritis
- Clenching
- Grinding and jaw injuries
Some symptoms of TMJ syndrome are:
- Pain in the jaw
- Tenderness of the jaw
- Difficulty chewing
- Pain in your ear or face
- Locking of the jaw joint itself.
- Sometimes people may also experience a clicking of their jaw, but unless it is associated with pain or limited movement, health professionals often rule out TMJ syndrome.
TMJ disorder can occur from an eroding or movement of the shock absorbing disk, damage to the cartilage or through an injury to the jaw.
