In order to understand what a disc herniation is let us talk briefly about how the spine is built.

Between the vertebrae of the spine are the discs that cushion and minimize impact from movement within the spinal column.

Ligaments attach at the vertebrae and surround the discs.

With age or injury, disc degeneration occurs, and the central portion of the disc can rupture and move through the outer part of the disc.

This rupture is known as a herniated disc and most commonly occurs in the lower back.Disc Herniation
